What initially drew you to your current field, and how has your career journey unfolded since then?
Mehar Deep Kaur: I’ve always been drawn to art and all things creative since I was a child. When it came time to decide on a career path, I discovered architecture and was instantly fascinated by its unique blend of science and creativity. It felt like the perfect intersection of my interests. During my final year of graduation, I had the opportunity to intern with DUAC, where I gained hands-on experience in urban development projects, further sparking my interest in urban design and how spaces shape communities.
As I pursued my postgraduate studies, I began to recognize my strengths and passion for research and writing. This realization naturally propelled me toward my current roles as a design educator and writer, where I get to explore, share, and inspire others with the transformative power of design and words.
Can you share a career milestone that shaped your professional path?
Mehar Deep Kaur: Every writing project I’ve undertaken and every course I’ve taught has played a role in shaping my professional trajectory. However, a defining milestone was 2 years ago – receiving the Nationwide Award for Architectural Education and Writing by Business Mint (30 Under 30 Industry Experts). This recognition became a moment of reflection—it instilled in me a deeper sense of responsibility toward my profession and the community I serve. Since then, I’ve held myself to an even higher standard, striving to contribute profoundly.
It’s almost ironic how much I’ve published and innovated in my pedagogical methods after receiving the award. The event fueled a new level of commitment that continues to push me to explore fresh approaches in both writing and education.
How do you envision the evolution of your current field?
Mehar Deep Kaur: Thanks to the pervasive influence of the digital landscape, people are becoming more ‘woke’—more aware of their rights, what they deserve, and what is acceptable or not. Systems that fail to act with sensitivity and compassion are increasingly being held accountable. As long as this momentum continues with integrity, I believe our community—whether students or design professionals—will thrive. This shift toward greater awareness and accountability is paving the way for a more inclusive, empathetic, and innovative future in design.
What inspired you to focus your research on sensitive urban development?
Mehar Deep Kaur: What truly inspired me to focus on sensitive urban development is witnessing the systemic neglect of marginalized communities and the subtle, yet critical aspects of urban settings that are often overlooked. I believe that in today’s era of profit-driven construction, true development will remain superficial if we fail to address critical facets of our built environment—such as micro-climates, coexistence with other species, safety, and overall well-being.
Our physical surroundings deeply influence our quality of life, and simply focusing on high-rise towers and expansive roads is far from a holistic solution. Sensitive urban development is about creating spaces that are not only functional but also compassionate and sustainable.
How has your passion for reading and research impacted your work as a design writer?
Mehar Deep Kaur: Reading helps me articulate complex ideas with clarity. It also exposes me to diverse tonalities, vocabulary and formats. This encourages me to keep experimenting with different writing styles and mediums in my own work.
On the other hand, extensive research helps me uphold technical accuracy in my narratives. It’s particularly crucial in design writing, where precision matters – from documenting user experience to explaining the rationale behind specific design decisions. As someone inclined towards journalistic narratives, research becomes paramount in maintaining the authenticity and credibility of the information I put out.
What were some of the biggest challenges you faced while researching sensitive urban development?
Mehar Deep Kaur: Many of the urban issues I’ve investigated lack substantial academic research or comprehensive literature. However, this gap in existing literature has ultimately validated the novelty of my research studies. It becomes even more gratifying to tap on the design phenomenas that are less explored, because they inevitably become an opportunity to contribute meaningful insights to the field.
How do your patented innovations contribute to your industry or field?
Mehar Deep Kaur: All my filed patents focus on multi-functionality within compact dimensions. In today’s urban environments, every square inch of space is highly valuable, while we simultaneously face increasingly complex functional needs. Therefore, my design innovations concentrate on the intersection of spatial optimization and functional efficiency to create solutions that maximize utility without expanding physical footprint. This approach directly addresses one of our industry’s most pressing challenges: doing more with less space. I also endeavor to maintain sustainability and inclusivity in my patents.
What advice would you give to young professionals entering your field?
Mehar Deep Kaur: Whether it’s design writing or pedagogy, continuously upgrading your skill set and staying abreast of industry developments is crucial. Equally important is developing your unique voice and perspective. While networking opens doors, it’s ultimately the quality and ethics of your work that builds lasting credibility.
I’d encourage young professionals to remain adaptable to emerging technologies and methodologies. One’s reputation will be built on the excellence they consistently deliver.
