Can you tell us about your educational journey at Dr. Bhanuben Nanavati College of Architecture and your involvement in NASA contribute to your development?
Anushka Kulkarni: The five years I spent at Dr. Bhanuben Nanavati College of Architecture were truly transformative. In my first year, I struggled to keep up with the course demands. However, everything changed in my second year when I joined NASA and participated in various competitions. While I loved architecture, I found my true passion was in these competitions. It was through these experiences that I also discovered a love for writing. Overall, both BNCA and NASA have immensely shaped my personality by teaching me effective communication, teamwork, leadership, and the importance of advocating for myself.
How did your experiences during your internship at Ochre Architects and Pensive eMagazine influence your decision to pursue a career in communications and architectural writing?
Anushka Kulkarni: My internship with Pensive eMagazine was a breath of fresh air and a welcome break from the college routine. It was my first professional experience, teaching me professionalism and helping me hone my writing and editing skills. I also managed their social media content, which involved video editing and content creation.
At Ochre Architects, I realized that while I appreciated architecture, designing buildings wasn’t my strongest skill. This internship pushed me to pursue my true passion—writing.
What inspired your transition from architectural internships and writing to a communications role at Archdais?
Anushka Kulkarni: My time at Ochre Architects was enlightening; it taught me a lot about the practice of architecture. The most crucial takeaway was realizing that practicing architecture wasn’t a long-term career path for me. This experience gave me the courage to pivot toward communications and writing, which led me to seek opportunities in architectural writing after graduation.
What are some key responsibilities you handle as a Communications Associate and how do you ensure effective communication within the company?
Anushka Kulkarni: As a Communications Associate, I am responsible for crafting short-form content for platforms like LinkedIn and Email. I also serve as a relationship manager for our participants, addressing and resolving their queries promptly. My role requires a deep understanding of effective communication to ensure that our messaging is clear and engaging.
How do you balance your passion for architecture with your responsibilities in communications?
Anushka Kulkarni: Being part of a platform that conducts competitions for architecture and design students helps me blend my love for competitions with my professional responsibilities. Although I see myself as a creative first and foremost, the opportunity to brainstorm competition ideas and think creatively about architecture keeps my passion for the field alive.
What do you enjoy most about watching and reviewing movies, and how do you incorporate this passion into your professional life?
Anushka Kulkarni: I’m an absolute movie buff! I love watching a variety of genres and analyzing them deeply. Movies that evoke strong feelings about their subjects resonate with me the most. This sensitivity also translates into my professional life, where I’m driven by a desire to help and connect with others.
What advice would you give to recent graduates who are considering a career in architectural communications?
Anushka Kulkarni: Architectural communications is a less-explored field with many opportunities, especially for those with a knack for writing and research. If you’re passionate about writing, this field can be incredibly rewarding. It’s a niche that allows you to creatively explore the world of architecture beyond traditional roles.
What strategies do you use to effectively manage your time between your professional responsibilities and personal interests?
Anushka Kulkarni: I’ve found managing work-life balance challenging over the last six years. However, I’ve learned that planning my day meticulously—be it personal or professional tasks—greatly reduces my tendency to procrastinate and helps curb my anxiety. By knowing exactly what I need to accomplish each day, I can ensure that both my personal interests and professional responsibilities get the attention they deserve.
What are your career aspirations in the field of architecture and communications?
Anushka Kulkarni: Working at Archdais has truly broadened my career prospects. I’m currently focusing on upskilling in marketing and communications. My goal is to pursue a master’s degree that will better equip me to thrive in this field. This additional qualification will not only enhance my existing skills but also open up new avenues for growth and innovation in architectural communications.
How do you see your role evolving over the next few years and what impact do you hope to make in your field?
Anushka Kulkarni: Over the next few years, I see my role evolving significantly within the field of architectural communications. I am committed to contributing to this field through my writing skills, focusing on elucidating complex architectural concepts and bringing them to life for a diverse audience.
