Joe Sam: With over a decade of experience as an award-winning news television journalist, I have honed my expertise in entertainment and lifestyle journalism, covering everything from Hollywood premieres to cultural trends. Throughout my career, I’ve earned recognition for my storytelling and ability to connect with audiences through engaging, thought-provoking content. Currently, I serve as the journalist for Texas Southern University in Houston, Texas, where I take pride in capturing the pulse of this historic institution and its vibrant community. My role allows me to continue sharing compelling narratives, from the achievements of students and faculty to the dynamic culture of the university and its impact on the local community. Positive representation of the African American community is what inspired me to pursue this career.
What’s the most rewarding part of being a journalist for you?
Joe Sam: The most rewarding part of being a journalist is the opportunity to represent a positive image of African American males and to share impactful stories from minority communities. As a storyteller, I have the privilege of challenging stereotypes and offering a more nuanced, authentic portrayal of individuals often misrepresented or overlooked. By highlighting the achievements, struggles, and resilience within these communities, I can help shift perceptions, inspire others, and contribute to a broader, more inclusive narrative. It’s about amplifying voices that deserve to be heard and ensuring that diverse experiences are recognized and valued in the media.
Can you share a memorable story or moment from your career that stands out?
Joe Sam: The most memorable moment in my career was undoubtedly making it to my dream market of Houston, Texas—a top 10 market in the industry. It was an incredible feeling to step into the role of an entertainment journalist for *KPRC Houston Life*, a platform that not only showcased my passion for storytelling but also allowed me to connect with such a vibrant and diverse audience. The energy of the city, combined with the opportunity to work alongside talented professionals in one of the most dynamic media landscapes, made this achievement a true milestone in my journey. It was a moment of both personal pride and professional fulfillment that solidified my love for this career.
What do you think makes a great journalist in today’s fast-paced media landscape?
Joe Sam: In my opinion, a great journalist is one who prioritizes truth above all else, striving to present an accurate and comprehensive narrative based on thorough investigation. This means gathering information through multiple sources, conducting interviews, and presenting both sides of a story fairly. A great journalist doesn’t simply report the facts but also provides insightful analysis, helping the audience understand the broader context of the situation. By balancing impartiality with honesty, they serve not only to inform but to foster a more informed, engaged community. Ultimately, a journalist’s responsibility is to deliver the truth in a way that best serves the public interest, ensuring that every story, no matter how complex, is told with integrity and clarity.
How has your background in Opelousas, Louisiana, influenced your approach to storytelling?
Joe Sam: Growing up in a small town in Louisiana has given me a unique perspective on what it truly means to represent underserved communities. These towns often get overlooked in mainstream media, and the people who live there rarely find themselves in the spotlight. Yet, it is these very communities—rich with culture, resilience, and untold stories—that offer the most compelling narratives for journalists. My experiences shaped my understanding of the everyday struggles, triumphs, and values that define small-town life. It’s in these overlooked places where the most authentic and impactful stories emerge, and I am driven by a deep sense of responsibility to amplify their voices and bring attention to the lives and issues that matter most to them.
What challenges have you faced in your career, and how have you overcome them?
Joe Sam: Throughout my career in the news industry, I faced a multitude of challenges that tested my resilience and determination. Toxic work environments, pervasive racism, and retaliation were obstacles I had to navigate while trying to excel in a field often resistant to change. Coupled with inexperienced managers who lacked the insight and leadership to support their teams, these struggles left many of my colleagues and me feeling powerless. However, I used my knowledge of the system—the politics of media organizations, the legal rights of employees, and strategies for self-advocacy—to confront and overcome these injustices. By taking a stand and advocating for myself and others, I not only managed to hold these stations accountable but also found a sense of empowerment that was deeply transformative. This experience led me to write and publish my first book, *Keeping News from Breaking You*, a guide for my fellow journalists facing similar obstacles. Through this work, I hope to help others better navigate the challenges of the industry, offering insights and tools to protect their well-being and career while fighting against the forces that seek to undermine them.
How do you stay motivated and creative while covering diverse stories?
Joe Sam: The appreciation and positive impact I receive from my community are the driving forces that keep me motivated to continue sharing its stories. When people express gratitude for the stories I tell or tell me how they resonate with their own experiences, it reinforces the importance of preserving and amplifying these voices. The sense of connection and the realization that these stories can inspire, uplift, and create change only deepens my commitment. Each story shared not only strengthens the bond within the community but also reminds me of the power of narrative to shape perceptions, build understanding, and foster unity. The feedback I get from those who listen, reflect, and relate, continues to inspire me to keep going, knowing that these shared experiences are making a real, positive impact.
What does winning awards mean to you, and how do they reflect your dedication to journalism?
Joe Sam: I love winning awards because they serve as a powerful confirmation that my hard work is being recognized and valued. Each accolade represents the effort, dedication, and passion I’ve poured into my work. Awards not only provide personal validation but also signal to others that my contributions stand out among the rest. They create a sense of trust and respect, showing that my work is regarded as top-tier by those in the field. The accumulation of awards becomes a testament to my expertise, reinforcing the belief that what I do is of exceptional quality and worth celebrating.
How do you balance delivering important news with keeping it engaging for viewers?
Joe Sam: As a journalist, I strive to balance the delivery of important news with maintaining viewer engagement by presenting information in a clear, concise, and compelling manner. I recognize that while the news may be serious or heavy, it’s essential to present it in a way that holds the audience’s attention without compromising its significance. This means using a mix of strong storytelling techniques, including relatable context, human interest angles, and visuals that support the narrative. I also tailor the tone to fit the subject—whether it’s calm and measured for sensitive stories or more dynamic and energetic for breaking news—ensuring the delivery resonates with viewers while keeping them informed and engaged.
